Fort Chiswell was named for the frontier fort that was located near the intersection of present day I-81 and I-77. There is an arrowhead shaped marker on the north side of the junction of interstates I-81 and I-77. It was one of the frontier forts constructed to protect settlers from Indian attach before the Revolutionary War. Fort Chiswell is a growing community, thriving on interstate commerce. Because it doesn't have its own post office, the mailing address for the Fort Chiswell area is Max Meadows.
